Our Emergent Curriculum

To see a world in a grain of sand

And a heaven in a wildflower

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand

And eternity in an hour

- William Blake, 1803

Blake's poem, Auguries of Innocence, serves as a poignant reminder to perceive the world through the lens of the minuscule, urging us to uncover its essence and beauty in the smallest details. Children possess a magical ability to lead us into a slower pace. In doing so, we gain the precious gift of time and patience to observe what initially appears as small sources of pleasure. As we collectively appreciate and explore, we come to understand the true magnitude and significance of these moments—emphasizing the importance of 'stopping to smell the flowers.'

Our emergent curriculum embodies the essence of valuing how children perceive the world. It represents both a philosophy of teaching and a method of crafting a children's curriculum that centers on responsiveness to their interests and perspectives. The goal is to create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences, guided by the belief that every plant, tree, and creature holds a valuable lesson, transforming nature into our expansive classroom waiting to be explored.

This approach empowers teachers to gain a deeper understanding of each child's individual needs and interests, thereby enhancing the quality of their interactions. Meaningful learning naturally unfolds when children are granted agency and the freedom to take ownership of their learning, transcending the confines of traditional classrooms.

Guided by intentional questions and engagements aligned with children's interests and developmental stages, our pedagogy supports a holistic educational approach. Here, the boundaries between subject areas blur, fostering an environment where children's innate curiosity and wonder drive learning.

We strongly believe in the value of cultivating relationships among teachers, children, families, and the local community. Our program actively incorporates community development projects, field trips, and guest speakers. Our overarching goal is to nurture a trusting, safe, and reciprocal learning environment that not only builds community but also instills respect for it and a profound connection to the land and our place within it.

Furthermore, research highlights the myriad benefits of a multiage learning environment, including the development of children's social, emotional, and verbal skills, as well as their self-esteem. This approach allows children to learn at their own pace, fostering a caring, child-centered, and project-based learning environment. It also contributes to improving children's attitudes toward school. link to article

Hudson Forest Play was founded with a simple yet powerful vision: to empower children by fostering a connection with nature. Our shared mission revolves around enhancing well-being through daily outdoor activities where children play, explore, and learn.

Our program is designed to inspire wonder, critical thinking, and teamwork. We strive to create a safe space for children to take risks, voice their opinions, express their ideas, and actively care for the wildlife that surrounds them.

Our Core Values are grounded in:

Respect: For self, others and the environment,

Joy: Experience joyful learning, and

Community: A sense of belonging.
